Night and Day and Shadows
We know that we need light to be able to see things. We know that there is natural light, which God made, and artificial light.
This week, we've been going into dark places and shining our torches so that we can see and we learnt how to make our shadows bigger and smaller. We made a shadow puppet show and made up our own stories! The book we focused on was 'The Gruffalo’s child' and it's now clear to us why the little mouse looked so big and scary!
Ice frost and snow
In nursery, we've had lots of fun investigating frost, ice and snow. Outside in the snow we have been mark-making with twigs! We love to run outside and find the ice and frost but we know we must be careful as it can be very slippery.
Our ice sculptures looked beautiful hanging on the trees in the playground. We collected natural objects from around school to add to water. We knew that they would not last for long as the temperature was quite warm and the ice began to melt.
We've made a beautiful displays of Jack Frost and winter mosaics. The skills we used included cutting, sticking and paint mixing.
Chinese New Year
In nursery, we celebrated Chinese New Year by having a Chinese Banquet. We tried prawn crackers, sweet chili sauce, chicken chow mein, curry, chicken and black bean sauce and egg fried rice! The food was enjoyed by all!
We have learned that China is in Asia and it is much bigger than England. It also has a very long wall!
We've been strengthening our fingers by using chopsticks to pick up rice and noodles in our tuff tray. It was very tricky.
Winter Olympics and forces:
We watched the Winter Olympics and were fascinated by how fast the athletes could ski and how fast they went down the ski slopes. We investigated how we could make objects move more quickly and how we could slow them down. We changed the position of the ramps, used more force when pushing the objects, used different objects and added friction to slow objects down.
Receiving the ashes on Ash Wednesday:
Mrs Halsey put the ashes on our foreheads and made the sign of the cross to show that we want to make a new start for Jesus.
Shrove Tuesday and St David's Day:
We had pancakes and learnt about the meaning of Shrove Tuesday.
On St David’s Day, Mrs MacFarlane who is Welsh, brought in her traditional Welsh costume from when she was our age. We learned about St David and had lots of daffodils in our classroom.
In art, we learnt all about Vincent Van Gogh and made a class display based on his work ‘Sunflowers.’
