30/3/20 - Diversity and World Autism Awareness Week

Our current PSHE topic is Diversity. We have been reflecting on and celebrating our difference and diversity.

This week is Autism Awareness Week. There are lots of activities and useful information from the National Autistic Society for children to look at via this link:

https://www.autism.org.uk/getinvolved/world-autism-awareness-week.aspx

There is also a very special episode of Milkshake which is dedicated to this on Thursday 2nd April at 7:10am on Channel 5.

One of our parents produced this episode! And has kindly given us some additional information:

Daisy & Ollie airs everyday on CH5’s Milkshake at 7.10am. Each morning the children will discover the answer to a new question and so although an entertainment concept, has a lovely subliminal educational value that I hope all parents will appreciate in the current circumstances! The episode, ‘How can I make friends with Theo?’ was developed in partnership with, National Autistic Society’ and helps for younger children to understand autism and what makes us all different in a very sensitive way.

National Autistic Society have also prepared resources which you can download here;

We have also launched a new YouTube channel this week featuring 22 nursery rhymes to keep young pre-schoolers entertained during the lockdown. You can subscribe here;

Over the years, St. Hugh’s has developed a range of curricular and cross-curricular opportunities for children to develop in PSHE. These include:

  • School councils once a term
  • Circle time opportunities
  • Yearly drama performances
  • School trips
  • Guest speakers
  • Charity fund raising activities
  • Gardening experience
  • Involvement with visiting the local community
  • After school and weekend sports activities
  • Electing pupils for positions of responsibilities
  • Residential religious retreats and sports activities

………and many more!

We believe that these experiences enrich the lives of our children and provide them with very many opportunities for personal, social and health education development.

Please click here to view a Powerpoint Presentation which gives a year-by-year overview of the subject matter covered in RSE sessions at St Hugh's.

Emotional support at St Hugh's

Trained staff and trained Parish volunteers operate the Rainbows Scheme within the school, for children requiring support to come to terms with a divorce or bereavement.

We also run a Silver SEAL programme and NOVA group to specifically encourage self esteem with targeted children, as well as support certain children through the transition between different Key Stages. These groups are run during school hours with parental agreement.

If you would like your child to be considered for any of these groups, please contact your class teacher, who will be happy to provide you with more information.
