Autumn Term

Design and Technology

We created our own compasses in DT. We used polystyrene balls, a magnet, a needle and a bowl of water.

We stroked the needles with a magnet multiple times, poked it through the ball and placed it into the bowl of water. The needle then turned to point north – pretty much all of them were accurate!

Performance Poetry

In our poetry unit, we spent our first lesson learning the poem ‘The Door’ by Miroslav Holub. We worked as a group to learn the verses and performed them in front of the class.

Science

In science, we made our own periscopes to demonstrate how light travels in straight lines. They were very successful (if we do say so ourselves!) and were so clear we were able to go spying on the other classes in our building!

Design and Technology

In our DT topic, ‘Chinese Inventions’, we created our own kites using paper straws, tracing paper, ribbon, string and lots of sellotape! We then went onto the field to test them out – it was so much fun!

Science

In science, we have been investigating how the size of a shape can affect the size of shadow it will cast. We completed fair tests during our investigations by ensuring the shapes were placed in the same places, the shadow lengths were measured using the same rulers and the torches were held from the same heights.
